Today our opposition was Oakley - to be honest normally both teams are of equal standard but after recent performances, slightly concerned as they were sitting top.
The boys started bright today which was pleasing, and more so, that we were matching them in all areas of the pitch. Unfortunately though, defensively we let ourselves get caught in possession of the ball, and even then, the cover was lacking and one on one centrally slotted past Harris. Response was good though, continued to match them and create half chances but no success. Eventually, we scored! Corner floated in by Jari was met by neat flick from Josh k and Tyler coming in at the back post knocked in. 1-1 and all those hours of practising set pieces paid off!
Play continued to be evenly contested, chances starting to come for both sides but good defending by Christian / Yannis/ Josh h and Jeremy and goalkeeping from Harris kept in even.
Our luck deserted us again about 5 minutes before half time - from a corner that was cleared a cross/ shot deflected off Jari and gave Harris, no chance, 2-1 Oakley.
Told boys although 2-1 down, really proud of them for their performance, as were matching Oakley in all areas. Positionally, pressing of the ball/ player / decision making with/ without the ball was so much better. The one thing we could have been was a bit sharper in final third (gamble on through ball). Nevertheless good display.
Game continued in much the same vein - we slightly changed positions of few players but still evenly contested game. About 10/15 minutes to go, they scored and put the game safe. Again defensively slack goal, as marking from a corner, the ball got cleared and player was free on right hand side edge and fired in . We committed more players forward now to try and get back into game but got caught on the counter attack and they scored their fourth goal.
Final - score 4-1 Oakley
Message to the boys: Take heart / be proud of your performance today as you matched your opponent for 3/4 of the game. Individual errors cost us and that happens, but pleasingly was the effort/ work rate you put in. Defensively we need to try and focus more and offensively need to try and read situations better (through balls). Star player – Harris
I make no apologies today as one player stood out today, especially considering wet conditions - great performance Harris. Anyone that has had the pleasure of playing in goal in these conditions will agree, keeper’s worst nightmare. Well today Harris handling and shot stopping was of high standard in the most awkward conditions against a very strong side- great display Harris - well done!
Thank you to all again for support and help. Big thank you to nick again for refereeing and to Phil for running the line - appreciated as always
